Free Crochet Pattern: Dog Amigurumi


The Lunar New Year is less than a week away, and to celebrate the Year of the Dog, I'm sharing a free pattern for this amigurumi!

Finished Measurements:
Approximately 4½" tall

Materials:
Red Heart Soft in Toast (light brown worsted-weight yarn)
Caron Simply Soft in Chocolate (dark brown worsted-weight yarn)
Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Red Sprinkles (red worsted-weight yarn)
Lion Brand Pound of Love in Antique White (off-white worsted-weight yarn)
G hook (4 mm)
9 mm safety eyes
brown embroidery floss
tapestry needle
polyester filling

Final stitch count for each round is noted in parentheses.

Head:
Round 1: In light brown yarn, 5 sc in magic ring. (5 st)
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (10 st)
Round 3: *2 sc, sc in next st*, rep 5 times. (15 st)
Round 4: *2 sc, sc in next 2 st*, rep 5 times. (20 st)
Round 5: *2 sc, sc in next 3 st*, rep 5 times. (25 st)
Round 6: *2 sc, sc in next 4 st*, rep 5 times. (30 st)
Round 7: *2 sc, sc in next 5 st*, rep 5 times. (35 st)
Round 8: *2 sc, sc in next 6 st*, rep 5 times. (40 st)
Round 9: *2 sc, sc in next 7 st*, rep 5 times. (45 st)
Rounds 10-15: Sc in ea st around. (45 st)
Round 16: *Sc2tog, sc in next 7 st*, rep 5 times. (40 st)
Round 17: *Sc2tog, sc in next 6 st*, rep 5 times. (35 st)
Round 18: *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 st*, rep 5 times. (30 st)
Round 19: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 st*, rep 5 times. (25 st)
Round 20: *Sc2tog, sc in next 3 st*, rep 5 times. (20 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing. Insert eyes between rounds 12 and 13, eight stitches apart.

Muzzle:
Round 1: In off-white yarn, 5 sc in ring. (5 st)
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (10 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing. With brown embroidery thread, stitch an inverted triangle for the nose. I first stitched a triangular outline and then filled it in with horizontal lines, as shown below. Stitch an upside-down V for the mouth.


Ears (make 2):
Round 1: In dark brown yarn, 5 sc in magic ring. (5 st)
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (10 st)
Rounds 3-5: Sc in ea st around. (10 st)
Round 6: Sc2tog around. (5 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Body:
Round 1: In light brown yarn, 5 sc in magic ring. (5 st)
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (10 st)
Round 3: *2 sc, sc in next st*, rep 5 times. (15 st)
Round 4: *2 sc, sc in next 2 st*, rep 5 times. (20 st)
Round 5: *2 sc, sc in next 3 st*, rep 5 times. (25 st)
Round 6: *2 sc, sc in next 4 st*, rep 5 times. (30 st)
Round 7: *2 sc, sc in next 5 st*, rep 5 times. (35 st)
Rounds 8-9: Sc in ea st around. (35 st)
Round 10: Switch to off-white yarn. Sc in ea st around. (35 st)
Round 11: Switch to red yarn. *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 st*, rep 5 times. (30 st)
Round 12: Sc in ea st around. (30 st)
Round 13: *Sc2tog, sc in next 4 st*, rep 5 times. (25 st)
Round 14: Sc in ea st around. (25 st)
Round 15: *Sc2tog, sc in next 3 st*, rep 5 times. (20 st)
Round 16: Switch to off-white yarn. Sc in ea st around. (20 st)
Fasten off and weave in ends. With off-white yarn, sew a diagonal line with three smaller lines across it. This is made to resemble the frog closures of a traditional Chinese top.


Arms (make 2):
Round 1: In light brown yarn, 5 sc in magic ring. (5 st)
Round 2: Sc in ea st around. (5 st)
Round 3: Switch to off-white yarn. Sc in ea st around. (5 st)
Rounds 4-6: Switch to red yarn. Sc in ea st around. (5 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Legs (make 2):
Round 1: In light brown yarn, 6 sc in magic ring. (6 st)
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around. (12 st)
Round 3: Sc in ea st around. (12 st)
Round 4: *Sc2tog, sc in next 2 st*, rep 3 times. (9 st)
Round 5: Sc in ea st around. (9 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Tail:
Round 1: In light brown yarn, 4 sc in magic ring. (4 st)
Rounds 2-3: Sc in ea st around. (4 st)
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Assembly:
1. Stuff the head, body, arms, and legs with polyester filling.
2. Sew the muzzle to the face.
3. Sew the ears onto the head.
4. Sew the head to the body.
5. Sew the arms, legs, and tail to the body.
